Potomac Audiology News

It’s not uncommon for patients to have to pay for hearing aids out of pocket. However, coverage varies by plan, and you’ll want to review your specific plan to determine what type of hearing coverage is available if you’re wondering, “Does Aetna International Insurance cover hearing aids?”

With some hearing aids costing upwards of $3,000, it pays to understand what is and isn’t covered in your plan. Here’s what you need to know.

Does Aetna International Insurance Cover Hearing Aids?

If you’ve been told that your hearing aids are medically necessary, there are certain criteria you must meet for your Aetna to cover the cost. So, the answer to your question, “Does Aetna International Insurance cover hearing aids,” is: sometimes. It depends on the degrees of hearing loss.

  • Your speech recognition must be 94% or less.
  • Your hearing threshold must be 40 decibels or greater at 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, or 4000 hertz, or your hearing threshold must be greater than 26 decibels at three of those frequencies.

Implantable hearing aids and semi-implantable hearing aids are covered for members who have been diagnosed with moderate-to-severe sensorineural hearing impairment and have severe chronic otitis external or some other condition that impacts ear mold tolerance.

Be aware that Aetna International insurance doesn’t cover all of the different types of hearing aids. For example, free-floating piezoelectric microphones in an implantable hearing aid are not covered. Hearing aids used for cognitive decline or depression also aren’t covered under Aetna plans.

Before choosing your hearing device, you should check with your insurance plan to be sure you have coverage.
